Best Used Cars for BC Mountain Driving
AWD, tires, clearance, brakes and power for Whistler, the Sea-to-Sky and BC's mountain highways.
BC's mountain roads — the Sea-to-Sky to Whistler, the Coquihalla, Highway 3 — demand more from a vehicle than city driving. Here's what to look for.
AWD
AWD helps with traction when accelerating on snow and slush. It's a common choice for regular mountain drivers, but it isn't a substitute for good tires.
Tires
On many BC highways, including the Sea-to-Sky, winter-rated tires (M+S or mountain/snowflake) are required between October 1 and April 30. Mountain/snowflake (3PMSF) tires generally perform better in snow and cold. Details in our Sea-to-Sky winter guide.
Ground clearance
Extra clearance helps in deep snow, unplowed parking lots and gravel roads to trailheads.
Braking
Long descents put stress on brakes. Make sure pads, rotors and fluid are in good condition — a pre-purchase inspection should check this.
Power
Long climbs, especially loaded with passengers and gear, reward adequate engine power. Test drive on a hill if you can.
Cargo
Skis, boards, bikes and camping gear need space — consider roof rack options and cargo volume.
Models worth considering
- Subaru Crosstrek, Forester, Outback — standard AWD and good clearance.
- Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 with AWD.
- Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma or full-size trucks for heavier use.
Winter conditions
Carry an emergency kit, check DriveBC before you leave, and slow down — no vehicle is immune to ice.
