Best Winter Cars for the Sea-to-Sky Highway: AWD, Clearance & Tire Rules

Highway 99 between Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton is one of the most beautiful — and most demanding — daily commutes in Canada. Sea level to 700 m, rain that turns to snow in twenty minutes, and a legal winter tire requirement. Here's what actually matters when choosing a winter car for the Sea-to-Sky.

The winter tire law on Highway 99

From October 1 to April 30, winter tires are legally required on most BC mountain highways, including Highway 99 north of Vancouver. To be compliant a tire must be in good condition with at least 3.5 mm of tread and carry either:

• the M+S (mud and snow) symbol, or
• the 3PMSF symbol — the three-peaked mountain with a snowflake.

Both are legal, but they are not equal. M+S all-seasons harden below about 7 °C. A 3PMSF-rated winter tire keeps its grip in the cold and stops dramatically shorter on packed snow at Function Junction. If you drive the corridor daily, buy proper 3PMSF winter tires — the AWD system on your vehicle helps you accelerate, but only tires help you stop and turn.

Ground clearance: how much do you need?

• 150–170 mm (sedans/hatchbacks): fine for the plowed highway with winter tires, awkward in an unplowed parking lot or fresh overnight snow.
• 180–210 mm (most crossovers/SUVs): the sweet spot for the Sea-to-Sky — clears typical accumulation and snowbank berms at the end of a driveway.
• 220 mm+ (trucks, Wrangler, 4Runner): only necessary if you regularly reach unplowed forest service roads or backcountry trailheads.

Efficient daily drivers

• Toyota RAV4 AWD / RAV4 Hybrid AWD — approx. 200 mm clearance, superb reliability, hybrid returns roughly 6 L/100 km on the corridor.
• Subaru Crosstrek — around 220 mm clearance with full-time symmetrical AWD; among the best snow cars sold in Canada for the money.
• Subaru Forester / Outback — same AWD system with more space; the Outback's X-Modes are made for slush and slippery grades.
• Mazda CX-5 / CX-50 AWD — approx. 190–220 mm, predictive i-Activ AWD, the best-driving crossover in the group.
• Honda CR-V AWD — approx. 200 mm, huge cargo area for skis and gear, excellent resale in BC.

Family and three-row

• Toyota Highlander Hybrid AWD — three rows plus real winter capability and low fuel cost.
• Hyundai Palisade / Kia Telluride AWD — heated everything, snow drive mode, comfortable at highway speed.

Electric options that handle winter

• Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD — dual motor, heat pump; expect a 20–30% range drop in cold weather, so plan Whistler round trips with buffer.
• Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD / Kia EV6 AWD — battery preconditioning plus fast charging in Squamish and Whistler.

When you need maximum capability

• Toyota 4Runner / Tacoma 4x4 — body-on-frame, true low range, huge BC resale value.
• Jeep Wrangler 4x4 — unbeatable off pavement; noisier and thirstier as a daily.

Features worth paying for on this route

• Heated seats, heated steering wheel and, ideally, heated wiper park zone.
• Remote start (or app preconditioning on an EV) for defrosting in Squamish mornings.
• Good headlights — the corridor is dark and unlit for long stretches.
• Adaptive cruise with full stop-and-go for the Lions Bay backups.
• A dedicated snow/AWD lock mode and a proper set of wiper blades.
