Dealer vs Private Seller: Buying a Used Car in BC

Price, taxes, financing, protections and risk — an objective comparison for BC used car buyers.

Should you buy your next used car from a dealer or a private seller in BC? Both can work well. Here's an objective comparison so you can decide what fits you.

Price

Private sellers can sometimes be cheaper because they have no overhead. Dealers often price in reconditioning, inspections and paperwork.

Taxes

Tax treatment is different for private and dealer purchases in BC. Our PST rate table breaks it down — compare the all-in price, not just the sticker.

Financing

Dealers can usually arrange financing on site through multiple lenders. For a private sale, you'll need to arrange a loan yourself.

Vehicle history and inspection

Many dealers provide a history report. With a private seller, you'll usually buy your own. Either way, an independent pre-purchase inspection is a good idea.

Consumer protections

BC dealers are licensed and regulated by the Vehicle Sales Authority of BC, which gives buyers certain protections and disclosure requirements. Private sales have far fewer protections — it's largely "buyer beware".

Convenience and trade-in

Dealers handle paperwork and can take your current vehicle as a trade-in. Read trade-in vs selling privately to weigh it up.

Warranty and protection products

Dealers may offer remaining factory warranty, extended warranties or other protection products. Read the terms carefully before buying any add-on.

Risks

  • Private: undisclosed liens, odometer issues, scams and no recourse after the sale.
  • Dealer: add-ons and fees you didn't plan for — ask for a full breakdown.
