10 Things to Check Before Buying a Used Car in BC
History report, liens, tires, brakes, warning lights, service records and more — a practical BC checklist.
Use this checklist when you're looking at a used car in BC — from a dealer or a private seller. It won't replace a professional inspection, but it helps you spot problems early.
1. History report
Get a CARFAX Canada report. Our guide on reading a BC Carfax report explains what each section means.
2. Accident history
Look at the size and type of claims and whether repairs were done properly. Ask for repair invoices.
3. Liens
Make sure there's no money owing on the vehicle. In BC a lien can stay with the vehicle, not the seller.
4. Mileage
Check that the odometer matches service records and the history report.
5. Mechanical condition
Look for leaks, listen for unusual noises on a cold start, and check fluids.
6. Tires
Check tread depth, uneven wear (which may point to alignment issues) and the tire type. For winter highways, see our winter tire guide.
7. Brakes
Grinding, pulsing or pulling to one side when braking deserves a closer look.
8. Warning lights
All warning lights should come on briefly at start-up and then go off. A light that stays on — or never comes on — is a concern.
9. Service records
Regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance are good signs. Gaps aren't automatically bad but deserve questions.
10. Test drive, inspection and registration
Drive on city streets and the highway. Then book an independent pre-purchase inspection, and confirm the registration details match the seller and the vehicle (VIN).
