How Does Car Financing Work in Canada?
Principal, interest, terms, payments and approvals — car financing in Canada explained in plain language.
Car financing in Canada lets you spread the cost of a vehicle over time. Understanding the moving parts helps you compare offers and avoid surprises. Nothing here guarantees approval — every lender decides based on its own criteria.
The basics
- Principal: the amount you borrow — the vehicle price plus taxes and fees, minus any down payment or trade-in.
- Interest rate: what the lender charges to lend you money, expressed as an annual percentage.
- Loan term: how long you take to repay, usually stated in months.
Monthly vs biweekly payments
Monthly payments are 12 per year. Biweekly payments are 26 per year, which can line up better with paycheques. Depending on how the loan is structured, paying more frequently can slightly reduce the interest you pay over time.
What lenders look at
- Credit history and score: how you've handled past credit.
- Income and employment: whether you can comfortably afford payments.
- Existing debt: other loans, credit cards and obligations.
- Down payment: reduces the amount borrowed and the lender's risk.
- The vehicle: its age, mileage and value matter to the lender.

Total cost of borrowing
A lower monthly payment doesn't always mean a cheaper loan. Stretching the term lowers each payment but usually increases total interest. Always compare the total amount you'll repay. Try the payment calculator on our Resources page.
Pre-approval vs final approval
A pre-approval is an early indication of what a lender may offer based on the information you provide. Final approval comes after the lender verifies your documents and the specific vehicle. Terms can change between the two.
