How Long Can You Finance a Used Car in Canada?
Loan terms, vehicle age limits and why the longest term isn't automatically the best choice.
How long you can finance a used car in Canada depends on the lender, the vehicle and your credit profile. Here's how terms work and how to choose one wisely.
Common financing terms
Auto loans are usually offered in terms such as 36, 48, 60, 72 or 84 months. Some lenders offer longer terms on certain vehicles. What's available to you depends on lender policy.
Vehicle age matters
Lenders often limit the term on older or higher-mileage vehicles. Many look at how old the vehicle will be at the end of the loan. Newer used vehicles typically qualify for longer terms than older ones.
Lender requirements
Credit history, income and the amount borrowed can all affect which terms you're offered.
Monthly payment vs total interest
A longer term lowers your monthly payment but usually increases the total interest you pay. A shorter term means higher payments but less interest overall. Try both in the calculator on our Resources page to see the difference.
Why longer isn't automatically better
- You may owe more than the car is worth for longer, which matters if you want to trade it in.
- You could still be paying when larger repairs come due on an older vehicle.
- Total cost of the vehicle increases.
Choosing a sensible term
Pick a payment that fits comfortably in your budget, alongside insurance, fuel and maintenance, and choose the shortest term you can manage. Check whether you can make extra payments without penalty.
