New to Canada? How to Finance Your First Vehicle in British Columbia

Work permits, international licences and Canadian credit — financing your first car in BC as a newcomer.

Welcome to Canada. If you're a new permanent resident, work permit holder, or international student in Vancouver, you've probably discovered that having no Canadian credit history is the single biggest barrier to financing your first vehicle in BC. Here's how newcomer car financing in BC actually works in 2026 — and how to get approved without years of waiting.

Why no credit ≠ bad credit

Lenders distinguish between "thin file" (you're new) and "bad file" (you've defaulted). Newcomers get treated more like a clean slate than a risk. Most major Canadian lenders now run newcomer programs specifically for people in their first 36 months in Canada.

Documents you'll need

  • Status in Canada — PR card, work permit, study permit, or COPR.
  • Driver's licence — your home country's licence is valid in BC for 90 days; after that you need a BC licence. Lenders prefer a BC licence but will work with an International Driving Permit short-term.
  • Proof of address in BC — lease, utility bill, ICBC correspondence.
  • Proof of income — job letter on company letterhead stating salary, start date, and employment type, plus 1–2 pay stubs once you've been paid.
  • SIN — required by every Canadian lender.
  • Down payment — 10–20% dramatically improves rate offers for newcomer car financing in BC.

International driver's licences

In BC you can drive on a valid foreign licence for 90 days. After that, ICBC requires a BC licence — and many lenders won't finance a vehicle to someone without one. If your home country has a reciprocal exchange agreement (UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Australia and others), you can swap directly. Otherwise you'll take ICBC's knowledge and road tests.

Building Canadian credit fast

  1. Get a secured credit card on day one (Home Trust, Capital One, Neo). Use it monthly, pay it in full.
  2. Add yourself as authorized user on a family member's seasoned card if possible.
  3. Open a Canadian chequing account immediately — direct deposit from your employer builds banking history.
  4. Pay every bill on time — phone, internet and Hydro all eventually report.
  5. Don't apply for everything at once — every hard inquiry dings your fresh file.
